International Anti-Corruption Day

Since the passage of the United Nations Convention against Corruption in 2003, 9 December has been observed as International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) – a day dedicated to raising public awareness about the dangers corruption poses to the stability of a society and mobilising political will to tackle this global issue. Corruption affects all countries worldwide and it weakens the foundation of democratic institutions, stunting economic development, undermining the rule of law and eroding the quality of life of all citizens. After consultation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Regional Office, based in Pretoria, it was agreed that South Africa will in 2021, commemorate the IACD under the international UNODC theme: “Your Right, Your Role: Say No to Corruption”.

In South Africa, the fight against corruption is one of the major priorities of government. We need to come together to play our part in stopping this scourge.

The Office of the Public Service Commission will host a virtual event as follows:

Date: 9 December 2021
Time: 09:00 – 13:00
Link: https://gcis.zoom.us/j/94025805133

All government departments are encouraged to form part of the IACD commemorations and demonstrate that they are “Honest Public Servants”, and thus government officials are requested to step out of their office buildings on 9 December 2021 from 11:00 to 13:00 and show their support for the fight against corruption in the public and private sectors, and to declare that, as individuals, we will not engage in any corrupt activities.

Colleagues are invited to use the attached artwork to create posters and banners for the day. Officials are also encouraged to make use of the artwork on various platforms as a display of support for anti-corruption.

• These public servants have done so at risk of their livelihoods and sometimes their lives.
• We are determined that the conduct of a few bad apples will not tarnish the entire public service.
• The public service is home to thousands of dedicated, professional and ethical men and women dedicated to build a better tomorrow.
• We declare that the behaviour of public servants must be beyond reproach at all times.
• We declare that public officials must be resolute in stamping out corruption.
• We are working to ensure a culture of service delivery and excellence.
